Connecting to the Eduroam Wireless Network

Summary

This guide details how to connect to the secure eduroam wireless network at Brandeis University using your full email credentials across iOS, Android, macOS, and Windows devices. It also provides quick troubleshooting steps for credential errors, frequent disconnections, and certificate prompts.

Body

Overview

Eduroam is the official, secure, and encrypted wireless network for Brandeis University students, faculty, and staff. As part of a global roaming service, your credentials allow you to connect securely at thousands of participating institutions worldwide.

Note on Other Devices: For entertainment devices (e.g., Xbox, PlayStation, Roku, Apple TV, smart TVs) or guest access, use the brandeis_open network. Google Home and Chromecast devices are not supported on eduroam and must be connected to brandeis_open via NetReg registration.

What You Need Before Starting

  • Eduroam Credentials: Your full Brandeis email address (yourusername@brandeis.edu) and current Brandeis password.

Troubleshooting & Common Issues

1. Connection Failures or Bad Saved Profiles

  • Verify Credentials: Confirm you are entering your full email address (username@brandeis.edu), not just your username.

  • Forget the Network: Go to your device's Wi-Fi settings, select eduroam, and choose Forget This Network. Toggle Wi-Fi off and on, then try connecting again.

  • Use the Automated Configuration Tool: If manual connection fails, visit the eduroam Configuration Assistant Tool at cat.eduroam.org over cellular data or guest Wi-Fi to download an automated setup profile.

2. Frequent Disconnections

  • Disable Private/Randomized MAC Addresses: Modern operating systems randomize your MAC address, which can disrupt campus hardware. Go to your device's eduroam Wi-Fi Settings and turn off Private Address or Randomized MAC.

  • Windows Power Settings: Go to Device Manager > Network Adapters > right-click your Wi-Fi Card > Properties > Power Management, and uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power".

  • Wi-Fi Interference: Personal routers, microwave ovens, or personal printers with direct Wi-Fi enabled can cause drops. Ensure "Wi-Fi Direct" is turned off on personal printers.

3. Certificate or Authentication Errors

  • Trust the Certificate: Click Trust or Accept when prompted for radius.brandeis.edu or DigiCert certificates.

  • Check Device Time: If your device clock is off by more than a few minutes, security certificates will fail. Set system time to Set Automatically.

  • Remove Old Profiles: On macOS/iOS, go to Settings > General > VPN & Device Management and remove any outdated eduroam profiles.
